Background information
The sun as a power station
The sun has an enormous power. Every year it delivers 40,000 billion kilowatt-hours to the surface of Switzerland. This is 220 times more than the energy consumption of entire Switzerland. Already more than 65,000 solar installations with 660,000 m2 (462,000 kilowatt) of solar thermal collectors (without swimming pool heating) use this free energy as a means of heating. Almost 6000 mains-connected photovoltaic plant and countless island plants with an installed power of 70'000 kWp and covering a surface of about 550,000 m2 convert solar radiation into electricity. With this, however, only about 0.4% of our low-temperature heat consumption and only 0.1% of our power requirements is produced. We have over around 400,000,000 m2 of roof surface at our disposal. On this surface Switzerland would be able to meet approximately one third its heating and power requirements using solar power!
